TURBINATOR II, with driver Dave Spangler, set the all time FASTEST mile speed, 463.038 mph FASTEST quarter speed, 369.143 mph, and FASTEST exit speed 470.605 mph in Speed Week's 70 year history on the Bonneville Salt Flats (2018).
Go forward to the start, and watch
the amazing acceleration off the starting line!!
On October 2, 2018, Team Vesco's Turbinator II with Dave Spangler driving became the first wheel drive car to exceed the 500 mph barrier. Owner, designer and builder, Rick Vesco and his late brother Don began to pursue this goal 17 years ago. Tragically Don died of cancer in 2002 and never saw his dream fulfilled. In 2013 Rick began to upgrade the car with a new turbine engine, new drive train, new traction control, new brakes and new body. It was sweet success when on the first (and only) day of the World Finals event on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, Dave Spangler powered the car through to a spectacular 503 mph run!
From SDRC member Marlo Treit: This is some of the happenings at Woodburn. This was the second time we were out here and after making a number of adjustments it left on its own from a standing start very well. Les ran it up to about 100 and then started hard braking. It weights 8000 pounds and only has rear brakes. It did stop before the sand trap but the brakes knew they were well used. All systems that needed to be tested were and as it stands, just a lot more adjustments and fixes before a test at the salt flats. I had hoped to run at a longer airstrip but nothing worked out well and so this is the best we could do and it was just swell. After 14 years of construction it did what it was built to do. We are getting better at loading and unloading it and getting it started. That seems like a simple thing, but it is not and the more practice we get, the less of a problem it will be.
